Time is one of our most valuable assets, and what we do with it can drastically alter our life. Finding out what working hours fit best for your lifestyle will helo you prioritize your days. Choosing part-time, full-time, rotation, or flexible employment depends on a multitude of factors. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of each to help you find the best schedule for you!
Step one – find out when you feel most productive. Do you tend to wake up early, or do you sleep through the morning? Do you grow drowsy once the sun goes down, or stay up past midnight with ease?
If you already know which spectrum you fall under, it makes choosing your working hours an easier task. If you’re an early bird, you’re most likely going to choose hours early in the morning, when you’re most active. While night owls on the other hand, will bet just the opposite. Deciding what working hours best fit your lifestyle can also help guide your decision of which industry to join. Cafe’s and coffee shops have earlier hours, while fine dining restaurants are open until late at night.
Don’t try working a schedule against your natural circadian rhythm because it can cause you to experience burnout, or even get sick. Changing your sleep scedule and regular routine too drastically can cause negative consequences on your overall health and happiness.
A full-time schedule usually means you work 35 to 40 hours a week. When working full-time, you’re provided with benefits such as health insurance, dental plans, retirement plans, paid vacation, and sick leave, to name a few. It’s usually from Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, although the exact hours can vary depending on where you work.
In a part-time schedule, you work less than 35 hours a week, and your schedule isn’t as rigid as full-time. This flexibility means that you can work during the hours that are most convenient for you. However, it also means that weekends aren’t promised, and sometimes the hours you must work are a bit inconvininet. Not to mention, it doesn’t have the same security as a full-time job, including the benefits and salary.
Fixed Work Schedule
A fixed work schedule means that the days and hours worked during each week are the exact same. There is no wiggle room; if it’s Wednesday through Sunday from 2 PM to 10 PM, it’s not changing. You can discuss which days and hours you want to work with your employer before you officially begin working. A fixed work schedule can apply to both a full-time and part-time job. This can be a great employment choice for someone who thrives when sticking to a routine!
Flexible Work Schedule
In a flexible work schedule, you must have a conversation with your employer, to discuss which hours you will be working. Usually, there’s a minimum number of hours that the employee must reach every week. A flexible work schedule requires self-discipline since you’ll be the one choosing the days and the hours. Some days you work mornings only, while other days you can start in the afternoon and work until closing time. This allows people to balance out their work and personal life to suit them the best. If they even need to switch schedules with another employee because of a situation, they can do so.
Rotating Shift Schedule
Rotating shifts are work schedules that change with time. You work the day shift for several weeks, switch to the night shift, and so on. These rotation shifts may change weekly, monthly, or within a span of several months, depending on the job. This schedule isn’t for everyone since the inconsistency in schedules can be tiring. However, it can also allow for more flexibility depending on other activities/jobs you participate in.
If you live with a family member, parents, children, or by yourself, you need to consider how you will handle your household responsibilities while working at the same time. Working is physically and mentally taxing, and to come home only to have more things to finish up on your to-do list can add to your fatigue. How much spare time and flexibility does your living situation provide you with?
Having a job can help contribute to your household, but it takes away from your personal time and time with others. If you’re attending school, you already have the pressure of constant assignments, projects, and exams to take care of on a weekly or monthly basis. Not to mention, if your schedule is always changing every few months, that inconsistency can negatively impact your personal life. Figure out how you manage your time daily and see what working schedule fits it the best.
You have to consider your own financial stability when picking a proper work schedule. Full-time provides government benefits and more money compared to part-time, but it requires more hours from you. If you’re struggling to pay your bills and provide for yourself, you may want to consider a full-time job. However, if you find yourself in a relatively stable financial situation, a part-time job might work best for you! You can also explore working two part-time jobs to add variation into your routine.
Having to assess what you plan to do with your future is difficult; after all, plans are always changing. However, you need to figure out what you want from your job. Do you plan for your job to be permanent, or are you only planning on staying for a few years? Where do you expect to be in the future? If you plan on making it a permanent gig and want to move up the corporate ladder, a full-time schedule will be more your speed. More commitment means you’re more likely to receive raises and promotions; the time you dedicate towards your job means a lot to your employers.
If you’re simply testing the waters or want to gain experience to aim for a different job, then you may find yourself leaning towards a part-time schedule. It gives you a bit more freedom in comparison to a full-time schedule, and the added flexibility can help you in your pursuit to explore other options in the meantime.
