Sometimes you don’t get your first choice in positions. Whether you think the position may be beneath you, you’re not excited about the line of work, or maybe the pay isn’t that great, everyone has been offered a job they really didn’t want. Sometimes it is just a dream company that you want to be a part of, but they are only hiring entry-level employees. Or, maybe an opportunity you have never even heard of and forgot you applied to. Still, sometimes you have to take it because it is the only option. Sure this could be disappointing, but sometimes this is an excellent idea.
Many valuable skills and experience can arise from the unexpected, and being employed is better than not. Connections are everything for careers, and these job opportunities that may seem like risks can actually offer a lot of rewards for those looking to work through the uncertainty.
For starters, any productive experience can be a learning experience. If the job isn’t exactly using your best skills, it could be a chance to improve your weaknesses. Learning new perspectives or acquiring new skills is always something you can later add to your resume. You could still end up meeting new valuable people, learning about different industries, or various other learning experiences. This type of position can give you an in-depth perspective on another aspect of a company or industry, which can learn new interests. Simply taking a role like this could change your whole career perspective and direction. Sometimes these weird opportunities may seem very far from the natural direction of your career, and then end up being an integral part of the path.
Another aspect to consider is the ability to move around in a position. Sometimes it can be an excellent idea to take an entry-level job in a company or organization you are very passionate about. New positions open up later, and often being on the inside of a country will help you get them. Hiring from inside a company is a popular business tactic, and you would already know the basics of the industry. These skills are easy to transfer to another department. If this is not the case, at least you are employed and gaining experience. Avoiding the resume gap from unemployment is sometimes just as valuable as this experience, and sometimes this extra experience is all you need to get the next job.
Depending on the company and position, sometimes the benefits can be enough to take a position. This can be a significant expense for those with no coverage, and only having the ability to be provided with decent insurance is worth it. Maybe now is the time to get that expensive dental work done. Or, if perhaps the company doesn’t have great insurance, you may have another strong benefit. Even flexibility in a schedule is a massive benefit for workers now. Being able to make your own hours and modify a schedule used to be rare, but this is becoming the new norm. Having the ability to take vacation days to travel (maybe not now), or being able to work remotely while visiting family can be a valuable benefit that people may overlook. A less demanding position may allow for this freedom, which could be worth it in the end. Trying this new way of life and scheduling could be a game-changer you can’t imagine life without.
Similar to accepting an entry-level job in a corporation, you truly never know where you will end up. Only joining a company or organization that is large means that there will be numerous networking opportunities. Sometimes accepting this opportunity can mean that in the future, there will be another job opportunity that fits better. In all career fields, networking is the key to getting in. The more people you know and the connections you make, the more opportunities you will see around you.
Some companies even hold networking events or simply host parties that would allow you to explore some other options. When developing these relationships with coworkers, keep it professional, but open enough that they may even connect you with a friend who can get you into your dream job. There are so many people in the world that have connections through friends and family, and all you have to do is find the ones that know who you need to know. The majority of significant job opportunities come through strange coincidences such as this.
In the worst-case scenario that none of these other opportunities seem beneficial enough to stay, you can always keep looking for another position. Sometimes employees that have a job can be more attractive to employers. This can even be used as a bargaining tool in some cases. Using your current benefits and salary as a way to bargain for better offerings from another position can be a great asset to have the ability to bring up. A job is not a permanent position, and being employed is usually the better option when debating to accept a position. No one will know if you are continuing to look for a position, but at least you are giving the current job a chance as well.
Chances are your references will be older managers and companies as well. So, there would be little to no reason to contact your current employer. Still, this is a last resort option. If, by chance, the various other reasons that taking a job you may not want is a good idea. Many opportunities can arise from a gamble such as this. You truly never know what it may lead to! Happy surprises happen. Plenty of people have realized significant issues in their past careers by doing something a little different.
