Let’s be honest: we’ll never find the perfect moment to clean. It’s always easier to say we’ll leave it for later, but we end up never getting to it with that mindset! However, the payoff for keeping a clean and orderly space greatly outweigh the time and effort it will take to do it. It can be difficult to know where to start. Purge Your Office

This step requires your full commitment and the proper time and space to do it. Having to tackle a whole room can feel frustrating, especially when you don’t know where to start. To figure out what goes where and what to get rid of, you need to know exactly what you have stored away.

The only way to know is to take everything out! Pull out and empty your drawers, desk, cabinets, and baskets until they’re all bare. Have everything out on one pile (or several piles) on the floor. Take note: the mess will be overwhelming at first, but by the end of it, you’ll know exactly just what you had kept in your office, and you may even find some things you thought to have previously lost!

Now that your space has been emptied, you should take the time to clean it all. Dust and mold can accumulate, especially in those hard to reach places. The quality of indoor air has worsened over the years, meaning that your space is dirtier than you would imagine since that same air is cycled through the whole building. Now, more than ever, should you keep your workspace clean, or you run the risk of itchy eyes, runny noses, difficulty breathing, or getting seriously ill if you have a sensitivity to dust.

Declutter Your Mess

It’s time to sort through your mess and see what you want to keep and what you want to throw away. Make sure you have two piles that you can properly distinguish so you don’t accidentally place important papers in the throw-away pile.

Don’t try to hold onto any scraps or items that you know you don’t need and won’t use. Now is the time to see what you really need and will use in your office.

If you have important but outdated documents that you need to throw out, try investing in a paper shredder to properly get rid of those papers without worrying that the information will be used or stolen once you dump it out.

Once you know what you want to keep from your piles, plan out where you’re going to place everything. If you want to use a certain space for certain things, have it written down! If you think you’ll need a tray or a sorter for some papers, then make sure you find the right one you plan on buying for your office. The more time you take to organize and plan out how you’re going to use the space in your office, the easier it will be when you put everything in its place.

Compartmentalize Your Office

After you have planned out where everything will go, now is the time to act on it! If you can, invest in shelves, mesh desk organizers, baskets, or a trash can. Not only can those small items spruce up your office and bring variety and color, but it can help you in your goal to organize your whole office. These items can help you find a place for every stray item.

If you’re the type who needs visual guides, try using labels, so you know just what you’re looking at in one glance. If not, you can always choose to color-code your files and folders to distinguish what goes where. Just make sure you don’t end up getting your colors mixed up!

One way to save up on space if you feel like it’s still too cluttered is to make use of your vertical space! Place up your calendar listed with important dates or a bulletin board with daily reminders; you can use shelves or floor-to-ceiling shelves if you really need the space.

Assess what you use the most and make sure it’s kept nearby at your desk. Don’t overwhelm your desk with items; simply keep right next to you what you know you end up using daily. Check through your files for unwanted or unneeded documents and throw them away. Empty out your digital trash can, sort your files in the right folders, and clear up your desktop.

One important thing you should tackle is your emails. Respond to ones that are a priority and delete old emails that you have no use for. Above all, make sure your most important items are kept in a safe spot.

All the time you’ve spent cleaning up your workspace can waste if you don’t continue to maintain it. Make it a habit to keep things in their proper space and organize the moment you start a new project or acquire new documents. To keep your space all nice and organized, you need to work at it every day.
