If you enjoy customer service and working with a team, a job in retail might be just what you’re looking for. Here are some top tips every applicant should know before deciding to work in retail.

Consider The Customer

Customer service is one of the most important parts of working in retail. As an employee, you will be expected to assist customers in finding what they need, while also assisting with questions and complaints. If you have ever worked a customer service position before, you know that it isn’t always easy to be patient when dealing with a demanding customer. To work in retail, you must learn to keep your cool. Be calm and consider the wants and needs of the customer. Not every day will be easy, but you will eventually form connections with customers who become regulars!

Lots of Standing 

If you are going to work in retail, be prepared to spend many hours working on your feet. Retail is a very upbeat and fast-paced industry, so it is vital to be prepared. Invest in some good quality shoes that offer cushion and support. Take care of your body and do some stretching before and after your shifts. Make sure to pack lots of water to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Value Your Team

You will likely be working with a team, so it is crucial to strengthen your communication and collaboration skills before your first day. Your team is there to help you, and vise versa. Try to be friendly and professional with each member, and avoid participating in small talk while working on the floor. Always be respectful of your coworker’s time and show up to shifts a few minutes early! Offering to cover shifts is also a great way to get oriented with the team and management. Not only will this show that you are a reliable team-player, but your coworkers will return the favor if you ever need to call out.

While you are working, it is important to represent the store you are working for. As an employee, your attitude will reflect on the management, brand, and other employees. Be sure to come to work looking presentable, and try to be your best self while working on the floor. Dressing in the required uniform, arriving with neatly brushed hair, and speaking positively about the products you are selling will go a long way.

Presentation is Key

When a customer enters the store, it is important for them to walk into a well-organized, neat, and clean shop. Pay special attention to folding and organizing merchandise, cleaning the floors, and dusting surfaces. This is especially true now, during the pandemic, where cleaning measures should be taken extremely seriously. Your customers will thank you, and your management will be impressed!
