Dog Traits

Studies show that dogs can help alleviate stress, ease anxiety, and relieve symptoms associated with depression. Often referred to as an emotional support or companion dog, these pets can keep you calm and boost your mood, which will improve your mental state. When looking for a companion dog, you’ll have to look beyond cuteness. Instead, you’ll need to find a dog that is protective, loving, and has a happy and fun disposition. They should also be playful and enjoy being around people. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to a companion dog. You should choose a dog that fits comfortably in your lifestyle, family, and home.

Energy Level

If you’re an outdoorsman that likes to hike or jog, you’ll want a dog that matches your energy. On the other hand, if you describe your perfect day as sitting by the fireplace reading a book, your companion should be one who doesn’t mind cuddling or lounging around the house.

A dog can also help you to feel more secure, thus minimizing your feelings of anxiety and fear. In this case, you’ll want a dog that is calm but also alert. If looking for protection, a toy or miniature size dog might not suffice. Instead, you’ll probably want a medium to large size dog. With a dog like this around, you’ll feel more secure, thus minimizing your stress and anxiousness.

Some dogs like the poodle or French bulldog don’t really like to be left at home alone. If you work long hours or are always away from home, you might want to avoid getting one of these dogs. Some dogs bark when they are left alone. Therefore, you’ll also want to be careful with your selection if you live in an apartment or within close proximity of your neighbors.

Size is another vital matter when selecting a dog. If you don’t have a lot of yard space or access to a dog park, you don’t want to get a really active dog like a terrier or labradoodle. Some dogs have lots of energy and need someplace to run and jump every day.

Dog Types

The Goldendoodle

The Goldendoodle offers the best of the poodle and golden retriever. They are top on our list because of their social abilities. Additionally, because they are part poodle, they are knowledgeable and easily taught. Like golden retrievers, they are also fun-loving, calming, and have a gentle demeanor. They are likely best suited for a couple or family.

The French Bulldog

The French bulldog is a charming and loving breed. It is the type of dog that will cuddle with you but is also an excellent watchdog and quite protective of their owners. However, it is not the most energetic dog making it an excellent choice for the individual who likes to take it easy. Because it is under 30 pounds in weight, it is also an excellent companion dog for apartment or condo dwellers. This dog is a good choice for a single person or a couple.

The Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is a great family dog that likes being active. It will be happy to go with the family on a camping trip or for a swim in the ocean. Having short hair, they are also a good choice if you have allergies or other respiratory problems. Like the Goldendoodle, the labradoodle is part labrador retriever and part poodle. Easy-going, warm-loving, and a quick learner, they will make an excellent companion for a child, young person or an adult.

The Cavapoo

Imagine snuggling up to an adorable Cavapoo. Its soft coat, big round eyes, and lovable personality will bring you nothing but comfort and assurance. The Cavapoo is a mixed breed. Its genetics include the poodle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Toy size, it weighs around 15 pounds and enjoys being in its owner’s lap. Playful and energetic, it is also suitable for active singles or families.

The German Shepherd

If you want a big dog for both protection and companionship, take a look at the German shepherd. Despite their size, they are very compassionate and make good company. They are also very playful and can be a little rough at times. Consequently, they might not make the best companion if you have small children. Get a German shepherd to help with combating loneliness and anxiety.

It Goes Both Ways

Along with determining what dog will best suit you, you should also consider how you can make the dog happy. You’ll want to give the dog as much love and attention as they give you. They will become a part of your family and thus deserve your loyalty as well.  Dogs provide unconditional love. You can trust them to keep your secrets, and they never have a bad day. Get one of these five dogs to help you cope with the everyday cares and stresses of life.
