How to Make the Most of Your Day Off

You finally have a day off! Now what? This may be your most precious day to catch up on yourself or other things. If you’re stumped on what you could be doing, check out the many things you can do on your day off.

Schedule Your Day

Planning out your day will help you keep track of time when you’re doing any activities. For example, if you need to get grocery shopping out of the way, have a certain timeframe to complete it. That way, you can spend most of the day doing your leisure activities. How long does it usually take you to shop? How early do you need to wake up? Figuring that out can help you save time and reduce stress on your day off.

Here are tips you need to keep in mind when planning out your day:

  • Reserve leisure activities for later on in the day. Do your most difficult tasks first. It will make you productive, and it spares your mental health.
  • Do a quick workout in the morning to get you in the mood of being productive.
  • Schedule appointments or calls in the morning.
  • If you have much work to do in the morning, it’s ok to leave your chores for the afternoon.
  • Do your to-do list the night before so you can avoid morning stress and get to work right away.

If you’re young, you will find that you’ll likely be more productive during the mid-morning and the afternoon. Younger brains work differently, and it’s best to keep this in mind when you make a schedule. Only you know your own pace.

Make or Catch Up on Your Hobby

According to the Pew Research Center in 2016, 74% of Americans managed to dedicate themselves to personal activities such as reading. Throughout the mandated quarantine due to COVID-19, people have been able to catch up or even invest in new hobbies. Having a hobby in the first place is important, as it would help your creativity flow and keep you relaxed. Also, it could even be profitable. Your hobbies are your own personal interests, and they usually help stimulate your brain in some way.

If you don’t have one or if you want to try out something new, you can dig further from any of the following:

  • Reading, writing, drawing, or listening to podcasts. Podcasts are digital audio files or videos that are produced by content creators. They also have different genres and subjects. If you want to listen to love advice, there’s a podcast for it. Scary stories? Job-hunting tips? There are podcasts for those too.
  • Spotify, a music-streaming service, also became a platform that hosts podcasts. You can even make one if you want!
  • Attend workshops or take online courses to earn certificates. You can check events hosted by your local college or university.
  • Learn and hone your soft and hard skills.
  • Volunteering at clubs, charities, or places like animal shelters.
  • Traveling to different places and getting accustomed to where you live.
  • Programming, coding, or playing video games. Additionally, if you’re interested in sports and games, you should check out e-sports, combining the two.
  • Catch up on your shows or find new films to watch.

Stand Out

Remember that hobbies can help cushion your resume and helps you stand out. They are also great points to talk about during interviews, especially if you’re a teenager or college student. Regardless, hobbies are great for your physical and mental health. It acts as a safety net and allows you to unwind after a long day. The University of Arkansas System deems hobbies essential and provides a more thorough guide for finding a hobby you will enjoy

Overall, hobbies are meant to:

  • Be interesting
  • Relieve stress
  • Enhance social life
  • Increase self-esteem
  • Reduce boredom
  • Develop skills
  • Offer perspectives
  • Challenge you

Treat Yourself

It’s important to applaud your efforts and take care of yourself on your day off. On a day like that, you’d want to spoil yourself (not too much!). You can host an event or a party to celebrate personal achievements or just to give yourself a break and spend time with yourself or your loved ones. It’s a day where you don’t owe anyone anything. Just be yourself and splurge on items you want to buy. Of course, keep in mind to do it on a controlled level. You would want to refer to your budget, if anything. Have you always wanted to try out the new treat from your local bakery? Do you just want to take a nap? Do whatever that makes you happy! There’s always some benefit to anything that you do.

Catch Up on Your Relationships

When you’re working most of the time, it can be easy to lose track of your personal relationships with family and friends. You can choose to celebrate with friends this day by hanging out in a mall or virtually through Zoom. There may be those friends who are desperately waiting for your return. If your friends are unavailable, you can always spend more time with your co-workers. Though, it’s preferred that you stray away from any topics involving work unless it is of interest to you.

If you’re looking to connect with a family member or friend through remote purposes, you can try out these free programs:

  • Zoom
  • Skype
  • Discord
  • Slack
  • WhatsApp
  • Google Hangouts
  • FaceTime

Not all of them function unless you and the other person run it on the same operating system (OS). Take FaceTime, for instance. It only works if you and they have an Apple product. Google Hangouts and Zoom can work on many platforms, so you’d just need to do extensive research before installing any.

Go Outside

Many people are allowed to treat their day off as an indoor type of day, but you can go to other places to unwind. Restaurants, stores, clubs, malls, plazas, parks, gardens, you can visit any of them. As long as they take the pressure off your back. You may also want to reflect on your personality. If you’re an extrovert who needs social interaction, you can attend a party or a gathering of sorts. If you’re an introvert, you’d want to recharge at a quieter place.
