A resume summary statement is a brief note at the top of your resume. Typically, it comes right after your contact information and gives the details of your qualification for the job. This portion of your resume is strategically positioned, and it is usually highlighted so that the recruiter can easily spot it at a glance at your resume. The resume summary statement is the condensed form of your accomplishments.

What is a Summary Statement? 

When recruiters or hiring managers check your resume, you have only a few seconds to make a good impression. Hence including a resume summary statement that sells you as a worthy candidate is essential. In fact, most hiring managers don’t have the luxury of time to go through each resume in details, they often end up skimming through. So, with a powerful resume summary statement, when they skim through, they can find the most essential information about you and why you are the best fit for the job. 

How to Begin Writing 

Highlight your strong character trait in a few words. The fact that this part of your resume must be well written and catchy cannot be overemphasized. The characters highlighted in your resume summary should be relevant to the job being applied for. This helps you stand a higher chance of being selected. Don’t write a generic description of yourself or use words that have become so common that they carry no weight at all. State your current role in your job and other professional experience you have gathered over time. Ensure they are all relevant to the current position you are applying for.

Stand Out!

State how you will help the company achieve its goal. Every business exists for a reason, and you are being hired for a purpose. One of the best ways to sell yourself is to prove that you understand what the company needs and explain why you are the best fit to deliver it. Highlight some notable achievements to validate your claims. It helps to state some of the things you have achieved in a previous role relevant to the new position. 

Keep It Short

You should note that a resume summary statement should be short- about five sentences. It is not a place to address any unusual circumstances like the reason why you are leaving your current job. You may do this in the cover letter, but not in the resume summary statement.

I look forward to joining the company to further my career.”

The resume summary statement is a great way to make a first impression, and you cannot afford to get it wrong.
