If you are thinking about changing your career, don’t worry, as this is entirely normal. You wake up one day and realize you’re not happy at what you do, or perhaps what you’re doing is not what you should be doing. From having to relocate to a new city to possibly getting a new degree and professional certification, changing your career is never an easy decision. Here are key thinking points to consider if you want to change your career.

First, you want to understand why you wish to change your career. This is arguably the most critical question you need to answer. Knowing why you want to make a career change will help you understand what the problem is, and may create possible pathways for solutions and other alternatives.

Considering your Likes and Dislikes

This is the point you where you need to think about other jobs that fall within the category of the one you just left, or are thinking of leaving. Those are the kind of jobs you want to stay away from. Examining your likes is the best way to know what career will give you maximum satisfaction. So, you want to ask yourself: what makes me happy? What excites me? What do I have passion for?


There’s something called transferrable skills. These are skills you already have whose application overlaps across various careers. Skills in communication, leadership, digital skills, and so on, will give you a head start.

Research, Research, and More Research

It would help if you researched even further on and around the new path you’re venturing into. Never underrate being thorough.

You’ve come to the point where you have to master a particular subject. Take a course or two! Get certified in that area of expertise. This will give you an edge and put you in an excellent position to compete with others.

This is where you have to make some new friends or take existing acquaintances to another level. You’re not going to get a gig by sitting on the couch all day. Go out there. Meet the right people. Tell them what you do.

I know you’ve probably heard this a thousand times. However, it’s true! You have to trust yourself. Trust yourself to handle it, make the right decisions, and deliver at your very best.
