Self-care has been a popular term recently, and that’s for a reason! It’s easy to get caught up in your daily routine full of tedious tasks, making it hard to set aside “me time” as a top priority. While you might not have hours every day to fully pamper yourself, there are still a lot of ways that you can incorporate self-care into your daily routine. Why is this so important? To work your best, you need to feel your best, and self-care allows you to focus on your mind and body so that you don’t feel as drained every day when your head hits the pillow at night. In this article, we’ll share some of our favorite ways to practice self-care daily!
Getting into a routine doesn’t have to mean waking up early and hitting the gym at the crack of dawn. It can be as simple as getting up a few minutes early to do some stretches or wash your face. It can be hard to get out of bed each day when you have a long, dreaded day at work ahead, but having something to look forward to, like drinking a cup of coffee, can help motivate you to start your day. Routines are personal, and they help us feel more grounded and in control of everything in our lives.
This one might sound cheesy, but don’t stop reading yet! You don’t necessarily have to stand in front of the mirror every morning chanting these affirmations, but make it a point to reflect on all the good happening in your life and all of the positive qualities that you admire about yourself before starting your day. Whether this is while you’re driving to work or taking a shower, spend a few minutes being kind to yourself. We spend a lot of time beating ourselves up, and the truth is, how you see yourself is how others will see you too. If you feel confident, this will emulate in all other aspects of your life. Once you start incorporating this into your daily self-care, you will see a positive change in your mood, work, and relationships with others.
One of the best ways to start incorporating daily self-care is to spend time with yourself while doing something you enjoy. Even if you feel stressed and don’t think you have the time to binge your favorite TV show or go to that class at the gym, spend at least 20 minutes doing something else. Either way, if you’re stressed or relaxed, all aspects of your life will be affected by this. Spending some time reading a book or sitting outside will help you feel refreshed and less fatigued.
Chances are, those emails can wait. When you get home from work, try not to rush to your computer or go down a rabbit hole on social media. Sit outside for a little bit, practice some deep breathing, or listen to your favorite podcast. Sometimes, all you need is some time away from the hustle and bustle to be present in the moment with yourself. If you want to practice self-care, all you need to do is unplug.
Even if you’re on your feet all day at work, exercising is different because it releases endorphins. What does this mean? You’ll feel increased feelings of happiness. This doesn’t mean you have to have an intense workout. Instead, find a way to move that doesn’t necessarily feel like exercising. This can be going for a walk, going for a Saturday afternoon hike, or even practicing stretching or yoga. You can even ask a friend to join! Find something that works for you.
Send a text to a family member asking how their day was, or send a funny picture that you found while scrolling through social media to a friend. You don’t need to have a long conversation with someone on the phone, but the people who are important to you should be part of your daily self-care. If you find yourself too busy, make a point to check in with them once a week when you have some downtime.
One way that we tend to get stressed is procrastinating. When we feel overwhelmed, we tend to think, “I’ll deal with that tomorrow,” but this is just continuing that vicious cycle of stress. Before you go to bed, make a quick to-do list of things you need to accomplish for the next day or week. Then, figure out the best way to tackle them. When should you go grocery shopping? What can you get done before that doctors’ appointment?
Spend a few minutes in the evening or at night before you go to bed, reflecting on what happened during the day. Think about the good and bad, but your main focus should be on the good. Set obtainable goals for yourself. Think about what’s working for you and what aspects of your life could use some more attention. Journaling is a great way to do this!
Sleep isn’t usually something that comes to mind when we think of self-care, but it should be because it has a major effect on how we feel physically and mentally. If you have trouble falling asleep, create a mini nighttime routine. Try meditating, reading, or making a cup of tea to help you wind-down. In order to practice self-care, sleep is key.
Starting anything new is hard because change can be uncomfortable. So, rather than changing up your entire routine all at once, slowly incorporate aspects of self-care into your daily routine. If you forget to spend time doing physical activity or don’t take a break from your phone, don’t worry, and try the next day again. Focus on what makes you feel good and find ways to include it in your work and personal life. Soon enough, you’ll feel more relaxed and able to handle anything!
