How To Personalize Your “About Me” Page – Make Your Application Stand Out!

Resumes, job searching platforms, and personal statements all include the opportunity to write an “about me” section. This is a brief 4-6 sentence blurb where you get to introduce yourself to potential employers/hiring managers in your industry! With so little room to get your point across, it can be tough, to sum up all of your experience and talents into a short paragraph. In this blog, we will explore tips and tricks on how to make your “about me” page stand out.

Keep It Short & Sweet

Your resume already includes a detailed list of your experience and skills, so use the “about me” section to share something personal about yourself! There is no need to write a Harry Potter sequel here (although that would be fantastic). Instead, try to keep your “about me” section brief and to the point. Think of this page as an introduction to who you are as a candidate!

Make Sure Your “About Me” Page is Relevant

Keeping your application materials updated and current is the key to standing out during your job search journey. Your toolbox of professional experience is growing each and every day, so make sure to update your “about me” section to reflect this! If you recently got promoted, changed jobs, or started a new side hustle, it’s important to update your application supplements.

Write In The First Person

“About me” statements are usually written in one of two ways. Either in first person, or in third person. While both are acceptable, writing in the first person can help you build a stronger connection to whoever reads your application materials. Establishing report is key when job searching! Anything you can do to personalize your job application will help you stand out and start to form a connection before you even meet your potential employer.

Proofread, Edit, and Read Out Loud!

Grammar and spelling mistakes are a big no-no when applying for a job. You want to put your best work forward, and your application materials should reflect what kind of candidate you are! Ensuring that your materials are error-free will help you come across as someone who is detail-oriented and focused on quality. Make sure to use editing tools such as Grammarly and read your documents out loud, so you don’t miss any mistakes!

Now, let’s take a look at some “about me” section examples that really knock it out of the park. Feel free to use these templates as an outline when crafting your application!

“I am a passionate, detail-oriented, and collaborative individual with experience working in the retail industry. I pride myself on having effective communication skills and being able to diffuse conflict with customers and colleagues. My favorite part about working in retail is having the opportunity to build genuine relationships with everyone I provide service to!”

“I am a confident and reliable employee who thrives when working in a team setting. Over my 15 years working in customer service, I have been promoted to Team Leader and then earned the role of General Manager. My passion for people and products helps me provide excellent service every single day.”

“I am a passionate High School teacher who has over 10 years of experience working in both Elementary and Secondary schools. My specialties are in Social Studies and Humanities, as I have an interest in helping young learners understand media literacy and historical events. My students teach me just as much as I teach them!”
