Go Ahead and Hit Snooze

Sleep plays a massive role in the way we feel, think, and act overall. Have you ever noticed yourself struggling to stay focused or lacking motivation on days where you didn’t get a good night’s rest? Sleep is an essential need for the body to be able to function correctly. It’s similar to the feeling some describe as “hangry” when the body is lacking nutrients, and therefore can affect your mood. Your body needs sleep; otherwise, you won’t be able to perform at your best. Here is how sleeping more can boost your professional life.

Immune System Enhancement

Nothing is worse than trudging through a week in the office with a sickness, and we can bet your coworkers aren’t happy about it either! Sleep works wonders with supporting and enhancing your immune system. Your body naturally heals itself at night time when you sleep! Have you ever noticed that when you have a few consistent late nights, you seem to always catch a cold? It’s no coincidence. Sleep more to keep sickness at bay so that you can keep yourself and others around you healthy.

Less Irritability

Sleeping more improves your overall mood, thus decreasing your irritability. When your body is well-rested, you’ll be able to handle challenges and work through problems more effectively. It is easy to get frustrated when our bodies are exhausted. According to an article in Better Health, sleep can seriously affect our mood. In the article it states, “Studies show people who are sleep deprived report increases in negative moods (anger, frustration, irritability, sadness) and decreases in positive moods”.

More Creativity

Our minds work their best when we are fully rested. This can lead to a surge in productivity and innovation, which leads to a more creative workplace. Collaboration and communication will be enhanced, and you’ll be better prepared to tackle the days toughest problems. An article in Psychology Today suggests that your best ideas may come to you when your mind is at rest. Dreaming up solutions to problems may help you become more creative! In the piece states, “Today’s tip focuses on sleep. It seems counterintuitive, but the best way to get your mind working may be to put it to sleep. Lots of scientists have discussed how some of their best ideas came to them either in a dream or upon waking”.

Focus

It can be hard to focus on tasks when we are physically exhausted. We’ve all had days where it is hard to keep our eyes open, let alone stay focused on the task at hand. This can result in a lack of productivity, which can cause stress due to deadlines and assignments piling up. Have a set bedtime for yourself, and stick to it! Try incorporating some relaxing techniques into your routine, such as taking a warm bath or practicing yoga. This way, you’ll be refreshed, energized, and focused come morning.
