This year has brought many new challenges and hurdles to overcome. In the process of adapting to all of this change, you have likely picked up some bad habits along the way. While utilizing these crutches may have been acceptable in 2020, the new year is a time for all of us to recharge and begin building our better selves. So, now that the “new normal” has molded into just “the normal,” it’s time to reevaluate our lifestyle practices and form healthy habits in 2021. You don’t have to wait for the clock to strike midnight to start; this blog will help you begin forming a better life today.

Hold Yourself Accountable 

As we have all been in the process of transitioning to working remotely, endless Zoom conferences, and remote collaboration, our motivation may have decreased as a result of these changes. Laptop life can make anyone feel as though time is of less importance and that professionalism is non-existent. It is easy to roll out of bed, brew a cup of coffee, and sit in front of our screens in pajamas with the camera off during Monday morning check-ins. However, unfortunately, this habit can lead to negative effects on both your personal and professional life. Your co-workers and managers might start to get the impression that you no longer take your job seriously. It might be harder for colleagues to feel as though they can approach you with questions or opportunities to collaborate.

So, 2021 is the time to break this cycle and begin to hold yourself more accountable. You can begin this process by setting attainable standards that should be met every single day. These goals can include showering before work and changing into a professional top, eating breakfast with your cup of joe, and making it a point to have your camera on during the entire duration of every Zoom meeting. Implementing these small changes into your work routine will tremendously help how you come across to fellow professionals and improve how you think about yourself.

Stick To a Consistent Sleep Schedule

It’s time to tuck yourself in and dim the lights! Sleep can do wonders when it comes to overall health benefits. You will find yourself more focused, alert, creative, and you will be better equipped to handle challenges that come your way. We have all fallen guilty to the bad habit of staying up all night binging Netflix and catching up on YouTube videos. However, this routine can become unhealthy and affect how much you sleep, but the quality of rest you can experience, too.

Try to allow yourself to slowly adjust your sleep schedule and adapt to a more consistent routine. Make an effort to go to bed 30 minutes earlier every night for a week until you can get 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. You will feel, look, and perform better!

Boost Water Intake and Improve Diet 

This bad habit is a reoccurring statement made every year on resolution lists. However, you don’t need to make any major changes! Simply eliminating bad eating habits you picked up during quarantine will help you feel better and have more energy. Try to snack on whole fruits, veggies, healthy fats, and protein. Boost your water intake, too. This will help you to be more hydrated and notice improvements in your skin and digestion! 

Set Healthy Boundaries With Friends and Family

Setting healthy boundaries with friends and family is crucial. Especially if these people in your life have begun over-stepping due to COVID and the need for a small, consistent group. If you feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable with close friends or family visiting as often as they do, tell them. This is especially true if you lack trust in these individuals and are skeptical of their social distancing practices. The new year is the perfect time to address these concerns with family and friends so that you allow yourself enough space and time to become your best self.

Prioritize Self-Care 

Self-care can come in many different forms, and often times looks different depending on the individual. Even though we have all had more time on our hands recently, it is easy to let this empty time get the best of us and not use it to our advantage. Try to get creative and test out different methods of caring for yourself. Do yoga, take a walk, paint your nails, enjoy a hot bath, take your time cooking a favorite dish, or plan an afternoon to catch-up with a close friend and do something you both enjoy. Practicing self-care activities will help you stay in better touch with your emotions and appreciate everything you are.

Be Present In The Moment 

If this year has taught us anything, it’s that life can be very unpredictable. Looking into the future can be scary. Looking back at the past makes us wonder if life will ever be that way again. The truth is, all we know for sure is what is happening in the present moment, so it is important to enjoy this time of being home with close family, enjoying our living environments, and making the most of the present day.

You can practice presence by switching up your routine and trying different variations of things you love. For example, you can explore a new hiking trail if you are used to exercising daily on the same path. Carve out an afternoon to practice cooking a difficult recipe you found on Pinterest, one that will take time, dedication, and focus. You can also challenge yourself to accomplish a personal goal. Start that small business you have been dreaming of, adopt your dream pet, or paint your bedroom that fun shade of yellow. Now is the time to start thinking about how you will start fresh and make the most of everything 2021 has in store.
