From Friends to Founders – Learn About The Trio That Started JobGet.

In this blog, we will be sharing the inside scoop on the creation of JobGet! Tony Liu, Billy Lan, and Peter Lee started exploring hiring solutions for service industry workers in 2017, and their goals have skyrocketed ever since. They identified a real problem for job seekers in the underserved community and were determined to create a solution using simple and intuitive technology. These ideas soon formulated into a product that would disrupt the industry and change the lives of many – JobGet.

Now, let’s hear from Tony, Billy, and Peter about how they went from friends to startup founders!

What was your primary motivation for joining the JobGet team / starting the JobGet company?

JobGet helps job seekers find employment opportunities by connecting them to businesses on the app. The application process can be completed in minutes as no resumes are required!

Tony Liu – CEO

Growing up in a blue-collared and immigrant family, I experienced the struggles and frictions of finding entry-level and hourly work first hand. Fast forward to 2017, the problem still persists and hasn’t changed one bit – resumes, cover letters, complex job postings, and questionnaires are rampant (in fact, some assessment tests have gotten even more complex).

Peter and Billy recognized similar issues, and we wanted to introduce a new paradigm and a new way of job searching together. The new world would be fast with a human touch, especially focused on helping hourly workers and the working population that need help the most.

Billy Lan – CTO

I have a few different motivating factors:

1) I’ve always loved working at startups and have been an early team member at all my previous companies. I knew eventually I wanted to try my hand at starting my own! JobGet was the perfect opportunity to work with people that I admire and respect on a mission that was near and dear to me.

2) The first company I tried to start was in my senior year of university. It was a company aimed to create a marketplace for new grads and tech companies in Vancouver to connect. We ultimately ended up disbanding after building out the MVP, but the HR tech + workspace has always been a passion of mine. When Slack first opened up their slack bot ecosystem the first thing I built was a slack bot to find tech jobs. For me, helping people find work is very exciting. Regardless of whether you love the work, or the work is what enables you to have the funds to do what you love, it’s a huge part of people’s lives.

3) My personal story is that I’m the child of immigrant parents who came to US/Canada and could only work hourly jobs delivering pizza or waiting tables. Growing up I started working odd jobs at an early age (newspaper delivery, carnival games, line cook). I think that experience really helped define who I am today. The fact that JobGet is a product for the everyday person trying to make a difference in their lives really got me excited.

4) Tony and I have worked together in the past on a few different things and I’ve always enjoyed working with him. As I got to know Peter I instantly felt that there was something special that the two of them had and I thought that my skills and expertise could be very complimentary to JobGet. Not very often do you get the opportunity to work on solving a problem that you’re passionate about! Especially with people that you think are amazing – and in a market that is begging for innovation. These factors combined made it an easy decision for me to leave my job and join Tony and Peter on this journey!

Peter Lee – COO

I’m a big believer that everyone should do what they can to reduce the economic disparities in this country. It’s hard to believe that the US with the highest GDP by far is ranked 27th among industrialized nations for social mobility. The reason we started JobGet is because we recognize the importance of equal access to job opportunities as being foundational to solving that disparity gap.

How did you meet the other co-founders?

Next, we asked the founders about how they came together prior to JobGet. As it turns out, they all started as friends before pursuing the mission to help job seekers find fast employment on a mobile platform!

Tony Liu – CEO

Billy and I have been great friends for more than a decade dating back to college. We worked together multiple times previously through numerous workplace and university organizations. We’ve also been on numerous unforgettable road trips together, through a lot of thick and thin!

Peter was one of the first people I met when I moved to Boston in 2016. We met through a networking event and immediately clicked ever since. We formed a friend group here in Boston and every weekend was a fun adventure together!

Billy Lan – CTO

Tony and I met through a mutual friend in our freshman year of University at UBC. We bonded over our love for basketball and our similar backgrounds. During our college days, we were very close and participated in many organizations together. We also both worked at TD part-time during school at the same branch (Tony referred me) so we spent a ton of time together. After we graduated we went on a  trip across SE Asia for 1 month together.

Our careers led us down different paths and opposite coasts. However, we managed to stay in touch through our fantasy basketball league and related group chats. I met Peter through Tony and we hit it off pretty quickly. He’s a fantastic guy and one of the nicest, most humble, hard-working people I’ve met. I remember when I first visited Boston, Peter drove us everywhere and went completely out of his way multiple times to make sure I had a good time.

Peter Lee – COO

I met Tony at a networking event for young professionals in Boston and quickly became very close friends. Once Tony introduced Billy to me, his buddy at UBC, it perfectly completed the founding team! We knew JobGet would be more than a project but a viable industry disruptor.

What are your thoughts on the past 2 years of growth at JobGet?

JobGet has experienced tremendous growth in the past 2 years. The team has grown, the product has evolved, and new resources are being introduced weekly.

Tony Liu – CEO

Tremendous growth by an amazing team effort. Great to be surrounded by colleagues that take ownership and initiatives to tackle uncharted territories, bringing us to where we are today. Excited for all the talented newcomers in 2021 to propel us to an even higher level of acceleration in the coming years.

Billy Lan – CTO

When I look back at it part of me doesn’t believe it’s already been 2 years and the other part of me feels like it’s been even longer! It’s hard to describe the whirlwind that it’s been. I’m very proud of what we’ve built so far and especially the team and culture we’ve fostered. These next 2 years will be even more exciting and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together.

Peter Lee – COO

It’s surreal how far we have come as a company in the past 2 years. I still remember the original – and very rudimentary – prototype we used to sell the idea of JobGet to prospective early adopters. From that to a Series A venture-backed company, winning major innovation awards that most other startups can only dream of, has been an amazing journey. I couldn’t be more proud of my cofounders and the entire JobGet team for being the ingredients to that success. There’s so much that lies ahead of us. But I’m comforted to know we have the best team to get to the next stage together.

What are 3 topics that you love to read about / learn about (either work-related or not!)

Yes – the founders do spend some time exploring other areas outside of JobGet. (We were shocked too!)

Tony Liu – CEO

  1. I’ve grown addicted to reading about the job industry (Words I never thought I’d utter 10 years ago)!
  2. Leadership.
  3. Technology.

Billy Lan – CTO

  1. Anything startup-related (I love podcasts like Masters of Scale etc…) on how to scale a company.
  2. Basketball: I’m always reading articles about basketball!
  3. Travel and Food: Mainly because I’ve got wanderlust and I really love to eat.

Peter Lee – COO

  1. Startup and marketplace scaling.
  2. Cycling (longing for it from a distance)
  3. YouTube channels like Veritasium, Cold Fusion, Wendover Productions.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Building a startup is no easy task. So, we wanted to find out how these three founders stay motivated.

Tony Liu- CEO

Building JobGet!

Billy Lan – CTO

These days it’s making sure I’m enabling the team to do our best work possible. A lot of what other people do relies on the engineering team. So, I just want to make sure that everyone has what they need to succeed.

Peter Lee – COO

Kudos to our founders for taking the time to participate in this Q&A! Without them, none of this would be possible.
